Whitko Track Ladies Earn TRC Title

Whitko-Icon-130x130AKRON – The Whitko girls track team put on a championship showing Thursday night.

The Wildcats piled up 127 points to claim the title of the Three Rivers Conference Meet contested at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

The pole vault competition of the meet is slated to be completed Friday night at Northfield High School.

Freshman Kaitlyn Reed and classmate Abby Overmeyer turned in big performances to lead Whitko to the team title.

Reed won the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.90. She also took runner-up honors in the 200 with a time of 28.10. Reed also placed second in the high jump by clearing 5-0 and finished in fourth place in the shot put with a top throw of 30-8 2/4.

Overmeyer was second in the 100 in a time of 14.02. She also ran a leg on the winning 4 X 100 relay team for the Wildcats. Overmeyer  was also fifth in the 200 with a time of 29.49.

The Wildcats, who also won the TRC Meet in 2012,  also got strong performances in the field events.

Elaine Warner took top honors in the long jump by going 15-10 2/4. Warner was also second in the 300 hurdles in 50.16 for coach Gary Sims’ team.

Miranda Terrill cleared 5-0 to finish first in the high jump competition for the Wildcats.

Dana Hobbs was second in the discus with a throw of 98-02 and Taylor Zwick was third in the long jump with a leap pf 14-9 1/2.

On the track for champion Whitko, Reghan Craig placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.24) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (53.46).

The Wildcats also got fine efforts from the duo of Brigit Nemitz and Michelle Kelsey. Nemitz took fifth in both the 1,600 and 3,200 in times of 5:44.34 and 12:40.89 respectively. Kelsey was sixth in the 3,200 in a time of 13:04.51 and seventh in the 1,600 in 6:09.31.

The trio of Jazzmine Brown, Lexi O’Connell and Hailee Hunsberger turned in the top efforts for the host Vikings Thursday night.

Brown placed second in the 400 for Valley in a time of 1:03.35. She was also fifth in the high jump by clearing 4-8.

O’Connell was third in the 300 hurdles in 51.90 and took fourth place in the 100 hurdles in 18.08.

Hunsberger was second in the shot put with a throw of 32-6 1/2. She also took fourth place in the discus with an effort of 92-8 1/2.

Southwood scored 98 points to finish as runner-up to Whitko. Northfield was third with 77 points, followed by Rochester (72), Manchester (64), Wabash (58), Tippecanoe Valley (55) and North Miami (29).

Whitko and Tippecanoe Valley will both return to competition in sectional action on Tuesday. Whitko will take part in the New Haven Sectional and Valley will participate in the Rochester Sectional.
